What are we looking for?
BD is looking for creative and innovative ideas that tackle key healthcare problems. Any solution can be submitted, whether it be an idea, a fully working prototype, or anything in between. Go here to learn more about the previous winners and what their solutions were.
How to enter?
1. Register your school by e-mailing STEMStars@bd.com with your school's name, lead teacher name, project and student names.
2. Spend time creating your project.
3. Create a short video of between 2 and 5 minutes sharing your problem statement and the approaches you took to resolve it.
4. Prepare your supporting documentation (see submission below).
5. Submit prior to the submission deadline.
Submission
Entries must come from secondary schools in counties Limerick, Clare and Tipperary ROI only. The competition is open to individual students or groups. The maximum group size is 10 students. One entry per school only. Submissions must be in video format (no longer than 5 mins) and should include: the name of the school, the name(s) of participating students and teacher(s), the name of the project. In addition, to support your project, submit a document with an introduction, details of experiments and results, contacts you spoke with, reference materials and finally a summary.

Your role as a teacher
For the BD school’s competition, STEM Stars, we are asking students about their ideas to solve or improve a problem in healthcare. When schools promote project-based learning it inevitably builds a shared focus, encourages collaboration and raises students’ confidence in their abilities. BD RCI’s aim is to have a meaningful impact on STEM education, but it is your enthusiasm as a teacher that will propel students forward.
• Encourage your students to mingle and brainstorm with people from outside their social circle. This invites an opportunity to see things from a different perspective as opposed to working with like-minded individuals.
• Fostering an environment where students can freely share ideas helps to build a strong team where each person feels their contribution is valued.
• Help them to identify resources that they may not have considered.
• Planning is key in completing projects on time and to a good standard. Helping students build a timeline will focus them on the scope of their project and how realistic it is within their time constraints.
