BD’s IDEA Tempe Campus, located in Tempe, Arizona helps bring high-impact, new-to-world innovations into development. The Lead Engineering Technician (Engineering Technician IV) will be part of a multi-disciplinary Innovation team supporting a variety of medical technologies and solutions.
Reporting to the leadership of BD’s Digital Engineering, 3D Printing & Prototyping team, this is a position where the Engineering Lead Technician will provide quality “finished” 3D printed models and/or components/fixtures to business customers in a safe and timely manner.
The Lead Engineering Technician must be able to effectively collaborate with team members, local and remote, from varying backgrounds and seniority levels. They should have strong oral and written communication skills. The successful candidate will have a passion for 3D Printing with a drive to learn and grow.

Job Responsibilities
Lead the post-processing operations of 3D-printed models.
Train team members on the post-processing tasks required to produce quality 3D-printed models.
Operate 3D Printing equipment to start prints and perform routine and rotational maintenance on a regular schedule to produce highly accurate medical device prototypes in a timely manner.
Provide effective communication with BD (leaders & coworkers) and external partners daily.
Understands the “what/when/why/how/who” for all post-processing procedures. Drives process enhancement/optimization and oversees changes to finishing processes and procedures.
Clean and post-process 3D-printed models via hand finishing and secondary processes such as ultrasonic cleaning, sandblasting, water blasting, hand sanding, polishing, and painting while maintaining accuracy and visual aesthetics.
Clean 3D Printed models according to defined standard operating procedures.
Under the direction of the 3D Printing and Prototyping Manager, define, perform, and present results for R&D of 3D printing applications and be able to function independently.
Maintain proficiency in manipulating model files using CAD software (i.e. - Magics by Materialise or OEM-supplied software programs) to verify geometries before building/finishing.
Use precision measurement devices (i.e. – digital calipers, Keyence, GOM) to ensure dimensional accuracy.
Maintain finishing supplies in the laboratory and evaluate special supplies, techniques, and equipment that may be beneficial for quality model finishing.
Work in accordance with Good Laboratory Practices; observe all BD Safety and Quality Standards and maintain laboratory notebook according to BD Standard Operating Procedures. Ensures that all safety needs, including training, are met.
Wear proper safety equipment where required and ensure others comply with BDTI safety standards.
Actively utilize the Digital Engineering database to update progress on ongoing jobs and prioritize business unit requests.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma Required plus 6 years relevant hands-on industry experience with proven ability to perform model finishing, industrial 3D printer operation, experimentation, or a combination of equivalent education and experience.
BS plus 3 years of relevant industry experience
Experience operating 3D printing equipment is required. Examples include stereolithography (SLA), Carbon (DLS), DLP, PolyJet 3D Printing, and Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF).
Proven computer experience, including the ability to use CAD software.
Organized and time-oriented individual with the ability and drive to contribute towards the quick turn-around time on finished models while ensuring fine detail and accuracy.
Open to exploring new techniques related to 3D Printing or Digital Engineering-related areas.
Knowledge and Skills
REQUIRED:
MS Office (Teams, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook).
Ability to plan and operate to meet tight scheduling.
Experience with 3D printing post-processing methods.
Experience collaborating and contributing to multidisciplinary teams, including the ability to influence without direct authority.
Safety in a laboratory setting.
Ability to adapt quickly to change.
Clear verbal and written communication skills.
Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
PREFERRED:
Experience with Digital Calipers or similar measuring devices.
Experience with effective packaging and shipping practices.
Ability to adapt quickly to changes in program and project priorities.
Physical Demands
Physically able to lift 40 lbs.
Work Environment
Research Lab Environment that requires working with chemicals, and occasionally biological materials (blood, tissues, etc.)
